Systems Integration Team Lead, Montreal QC
Company Description
Xiphos Systems Corporation, founded in 1996, is a vibrant and energetic company in the heart of Montreal’s Plateau area. For over 20 years, we have pushed the envelope of what is possible in NewSpace and secured the trust of various space agencies and space companies around the world. The industry has adopted our design approach and, as a result, we have been experiencing several years of rapid, steady growth and the trend is continuing!
Our vision is to migrate terrestrial computing and network communication techniques into space environments. The company’s expertise in networked processors has evolved into a line of
high-performance, fault-tolerant flight control and sensor processing hardware and software solutions in wide and varied advanced space applications.
Xiphos’ primary markets are small satellites, space station applications, as well as lunar landers and rovers. We have delivered our standard and custom products all over the world and have been essential to many successful space missions. Our current line of standard hardware products includes the highly capable Q-cards and numerous derivatives of, and daughterboards for, the same. With low power consumption, high processing power, excellent robustness, and proven functions available off-the-shelf, our Q-cards are increasingly the preferred solution in the fast-growing field of NewSpace.
Role Description
The Systems Integration Team Lead will lead a team of talented Systems Integration Engineering Specialists to ensure that Xiphos’ various hardware and software solutions work seamlessly together to deliver a product that meets the specific needs of our clients and to ensure effective delivery of cross-site internal product development initiatives. The role will gather requirements, analyze existing systems and processes, design integration strategies, troubleshoot issues, and oversee implementation of solutions.
Main Tasks
Team Leadership
- Inspire, mentor, and guide a skilled team of engineers, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and innovation
- Actively build the team’s skills and capabilities to take on complex work
- Assign, monitor, and review work across multiple simultaneous projects
- Manage deadlines, priorities and deliveries within an Agile environment
Functional Responsibilities
- Act as the Xiphos technical representative in Concept of Operations, including:
- Working with the customers to understand and refine their needs (and intent)
- Clearly identifying the value for the customer
- Coordinating with the various engineering teams (Hardware, Logic, Software, Test, Mechanical) to ensure they are aware of the needs of the customer
- Providing acceptance to the customer once the internal teams are aligned
- Translate customer high-level requirements into integrated system designs
- Ensure the correct generation, validation, verification of system-level requirements
- This includes full system: software, logic, hardware and operations
- Ensure Engineering teams keep the needs of the customer top of mind and are collaborating effectively to ensure delivery of the proposed solution
- Allocate requirements to the relevant sub-system/components
- Lead system level design reviews to ensure they meet the requirements of the project
- Ensure lower-level designs conform to the system-level vision
- Review requirements, validation, verification
- Attend and actively participate in design reviews; signoff
- Ensure cross-discipline ICDs are thorough and oversee their refinement throughout the development process, managing conflicting interfaces
- Resolve conflicts between requirements by generating Trade Studies, obtaining consensus of primary stakeholders, and implementing the change of baseline (including making sure they are fully integrated).
- e.g. The solution to meet a performance requirement will impose a weight penalty
that exceeds the weight requirement: lead team to optimize for least impact to the
intent of the customer's requirements
- e.g. The solution to meet a performance requirement will impose a weight penalty
- Manage system-level technical risks and opportunities
- Act as Technical support for proposals
- Technical project management
- Define Work Breakdown Structures (WBS), derived from the design elements from the system architecture, in conjunction with the technical teams
- Taking technical input to the proposal and establishing the high-level WBS for proposals

- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Computer, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or a related field
- Master’s degree in a relevant discipline is an asset (spacecraft asset a super mega bonus)
- 8+ years (with no space industry experience or 3+ years of space industry related experience) in leading a systems engineering and/or systems integration team for complex embedded or electronics heavy products, ideally in space, aerospace, or similarly high reliability industries
- Verification and validation planning and execution for complex electromechanical / embedded Linux systems
- Experience working within the launch or spacecraft industry, including familiarity with space industry standards (e.g. NASA systems engineering standards, ESA ECSS standards), an asset
- Requirements engineering from components up to systems, using requirements management tools such as Jama, Doors, Valispace
- Test automation tools to provide verification artifacts traceable to requirements
- Technical Project Management within an Agile environment, using task and ticket management systems such as Jira, YouTrack
